Monica Carillo-Cassas

Monica Carrillo-Casas covers rural communities in eastern Washington Spokane Public Radio and The Spokesman-Review. She interned and worked as a part-time reporter at the Moscow-Pullman Daily News from 2022 to 2023 where she covered the quadruple homicide that happened near the University of Idaho campus and was one of 16 students chosen for the 2023 POLITICO Journalism Institute — a selective 10-day program for undergraduate and graduate students that offers training and workshops to sharpen reporting skills. Before becoming a fellow, she covered Hispanic life and affairs for a year at the Twin Falls Times-News, the first journalist to provide bilingual reporting for the southern Idaho paper. She is a graduate from the University of Idaho (Go Vandals!) and is passionate about highlighting underrepresented communities and unravelling social issues.
